Interview - Ben Weston

Can you give our readers a quick snapshot of your job?

I am Assistant Manager 1 at KPMG. I have been with KPMG for four years now.

I go out to client premises to audit. I make sure the client accounts are in line with the law. The businesses that I work with are publically listed companies that are in the consumer and industrial retail market.

Where did you start? Education and career steps?

After high school, I did a double degree in Commerce/Economics at LaTrobe University.

After University, I obtained a role at KPMG through their graduate program.

What does the graduate program at KPMG offer?

The program is a good start from University into working life.

When I started there were 20 or 30 other people doing the same program as well.

The program intergrates study and work. Over the term of the program you gain a diploma as a Chartered Accountant.

While you are studying you also go out with the team at KPMG and learn on the job as well.

What made you want to get in to accounting in the first place?

Accounting actually wasn't my first choice.

When I chose to study Commerce and Economics I was pretty open to where it would lead me. Ultimately, at the end of the degree I had to choose between entering into finance or accounting.

What are the key challenges for those interested in entering the accounting industry?

You need to know the basic fundamentals of accounting. To work in the top four firms in Australia you need to go past being good with numbers and really excel.

Also you need to be good with building relationships within your team and with the clients. Building relationships has become an integral part of my role.

Is there a difference based upon gender?

There used to be, but over the last 10 years it has become 50/50.

What are the key subjects that young people need to concentrate if if they are thinking about one day studying or working in accounting and finance?

Studying accounting in high school is essential. It can really help with the first year of Uni as you have  already learnt the fundamentals of accounting.

Also business subjects can help as well.

What can parents do to assist their children in the business areas - even if parents may not have a business background?

Encourage children to follow their own inclinations on what they want to do.

Parents can back their kids even if they don't understand why their children like the fields that they like.

What is the key business message you would give young persons today?

Its never too early to aim high.
